Mürzsteg Hunting Castle
General and Historic Information
In the middle of the 19th century, Emperor Francis Joseph I visited the village of Mürzsteg on a regular basis for hunting purposes. In 1854, he and his wife, Empress Elisabeth (popularly called "Sisi"), even spent their honeymoon there. The hunting castle itself was built later, in 1869, reflecting the Swiss mountain style.
It was converted into the castle as we know it today in 1902. Mürzsteg used to be an important venue for political negotiations with Tsar Nicolaus II of Russia in regards to Austria’s and Russia’s role in the Balkan region in the beginning of the 20th century.
Mürzsteg Hunting Castle has served as the summer residence of the Austrian Federal President since the Second World War
