General and Historic Information

The secondary education facility Höhere Bundeslehr- und Forschungsanstalt Schönbrunn ("Higher Federal Learning and Research Institute Vienna-Schönbrunn") has got a tumultuous past. Its beginnings go back to the era of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. After the Institute of Fruit Growing and Horticulture was founded in South Moravia in 1895, and the Agricultural Research and Education Center for Viticulture, Fruit and Horticulture was founded in 1925 in Klosterneuburg, construction works began on the first own horticulture school on the grounds of the former Schönbrunn Berggarten (mountain garden) in 1949. It was inaugurated in 1951.

The research institute’s spheres comprise the areas of horticulture and garden design, particularly the following:

  • Research in the field of horticulture
  • Analysis, examination and evaluation of plants, seeds and propagation material
  • Collection, processing, preservation and development of genetic material that is vital for horticultural plant breeding
  • Planning in the field of horticulture and garden design
