General and Historical Facts

The civil service building at Hohenstaufengasse 3 was erected in 1881 by Otto Wagner to house an Austrian bank called Österreichische Länderbank. It was Wagner’s first modern office building in Vienna. Its floor plan, layout and the courtyard-facing façade are something extraordinary and reflected a spirit of revolutionary modernity and novelty at the time, compared to existing standards.

Nowadays, the building is used by the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Civil Service and Sport.
